Scripture Union Daily Guide 6 October 2024: God’s Permissive Will

Daily Guide Devotional For Today 6th October 2024 (Sunday)

TOPIC: GOD’S PERMISSIVE WILL

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, grant me divine guidance as I read and meditate on your word in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE: 1 SAMUEL 12.1-25

Question(s) for Reflection
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 6 October 2024 Outline:

How does Samuel’s leadership scorecard in vs.2-5 challenge you as a Christian leader? God never forces us to follow His plan. He has given us free will and the freedom to exercise it even against His directives. This was what happened in the Garden of Eden. He could have forced Adam and Eve not to eat the forbidden fruit, but He did not.

The will of God is that Israel should have Him as their King, quiet different from having a human king. But here because of Israel’s insistence and self will, God permitted them to have a human king, which meant that they were deposing Him as their king (v.12)! This is permissive will.

Still God sent His prophet, Samuel, to remind them of His goodness throughout their history (vs.6-11). He promised to be with them and their king if only they would obey Him (vs.14, and 20-21); He demonstrated His power with thunder and rain in the dry season (vs.17-19); and He reminded them of the danger of further disobedience (vs.24-25). Why did God do all these things for them according to v.22?

Practice/Word Application
So what? Make v.23 your own prayer concerning your own country.

Teach me, my God and King
1 Teach me, my God and King,
in all things Thee to see,
and what I do in anything,
to do it as for Thee.

2 To scorn the senses’ sway,
while still to Thee I tend;
in all I do be Thou the Way,
in all be Thou the End.

3 All may of Thee partake;
nothing so small can be,
but draws, when acted for Thy sake,
greatness and worth from Thee.

4 If done t’obey Thy laws,
e’en servile labors shine;
hallowed is toil, if this the cause,
the meanest work divine.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with 2 Corinthians 9:8
“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”
